July 11th: ‘A lovely letter from Bill’
In today’s diary dive, we return to the diaries of Margetta Hirsch Doyle.
In a previous newsletter, I shared a diary entry from one of Margetta Hirsch Doyle’s diaries, which span from 1942 to 1945.
Margetta went to William & Mary college at the time of the diary entries that are available in digitised form. Today’s entry comes from 1945, so she was 19 when she wrote this. The diary she used is a five year diary, but she just used it for a year and wrote on the full page for each day.
I didn’t feel too well and so relaxed some more… getting up just enough energy to work on my scrapbook of my last two years at W&M.
We went to the hospital this afternoon and then on the way home stopped in at the Hillside to see Judy Garland in “The Clock” - it was such [?]! - [?] was here when we came home.
A lovely letter from Bill June 13th and a birthday letter from him written to kyzer[?] - (so thoughtful of him!) - and a sweet letter from Freddie, who is such an understanding guy!
Transcription note: I couldn’t quite make out some words and names (marked with [?] here) - do let me know if you have an idea of what they might be!
If you’ve read the previous diary entry from Margetta that I shared, you might remember the two Bills and wonder which one she’s referring to here - unfortunately I’ll have to keep both of us in suspense because I didn’t have time today to read through more of her diaries to find out if it’s Bill Boyd or Bill Brennan. Looks like I’ll have to write another newsletter about Margetta sometime!
See here for some scans and transcripts of Margetta’s diaries.
In The Doyle Diary Project, a group of students transcribed Margetta’s 1944 diary and added helpful contextual notes to it - definitely worth a read!
